First Tuesdays Presents Maria Lisella

Queens born and bred, Maria Lisel­la is the sixth win­ner in the com­pe­ti­tion for Queens Poet Lau­re­ate 2015–2018 and the first Ital­ian Amer­i­can. She is the author of the col­lec­tion, Thieves in the Fam­i­ly (NYQ Books), and two chap­books Amore on Hope Street (Fin­ish­ing Line Press) and Two Naked Feet (Poets Wear Pra­da). She is a CUNY alum of Queens­bor­ough Com­mu­ni­ty Col­lege and Queens Col­lege; and earned a Master’s at NYU-Poly­tech­nic in Spe­cial­ized Jour­nal­ism. She did not fol­low a straight tra­jec­to­ry from Queens to the 62 coun­tries she vis­it­ed how­ev­er, and will share that jour­ney with you. Her recent essay, Shades, Col­or and Inter­nal Dia­logues in White Amer­i­ca appears in the anthol­o­gy, What Does it Mean to Be White in Amer­i­ca? edit­ed by Gabreille David and Sean Fred­er­ick Forbes pub­lished by 2LeafPress. She is on the Board of the Ital­ian Amer­i­can Writ­ers Asso­ci­a­tion and co-curates its read­ings, the longest run­ning lit­er­ary series in Green­wich Vil­lage. Addi­tion­al­ly, she is vice pres­i­dent of the edu­ca­tion­al orga­ni­za­tion, the Vito Mar­can­to­nio Forum. She is cur­rent­ly a New York Expert for USA TODAY and heads the social media com­mit­tee for the New York Trav­el Writ­ers Asso­ci­a­tion.
